One cold October night while I was still in college, a gray kitten began scratching at the window pane. While I knew my response held the potential of inheriting a new family member, the option to ignore it was just not possible. I made a soft nest on the back porch, and gave her some food and warm milk. Needless to say, Lucy the cat was a member of my family for 16 more years.
