Mr. Waugh’s Lilacs

Acrylic on paper, 18″x24″

I had an old neighbor once who had the biggest, most bountiful lilac bushes in his yard. I would see him sitting in the sun, smoking his cigarettes and reading. I really wanted to cut some of those lilacs, but I was hesitant to just walk over there as he looked a bit grumpy. So I baked him a pie, and took it to him. He turned out to be the sweetest man. He ate half the pie on the spot, lured me into a game of chess, we made plans to do a joint vegetable garden and I went home with armfuls of Mr. Waugh’s lilacs.
